Social Media is Making Us Stupid

Quitting Social Media Is The Best Thing I Did For Myself This Year

Earlier this year, I realized how much time I was wasting on social media. Watching ‘funny’ videos and watching people I don’t even know do random things.

It’s estimated that at least 210 million people worldwide are addicted to social media. It turns us into zombies, mindlessly scrolling until our phones die.

Let’s say you work 8 hours a day and sleep for 8 more. That leaves you with 8 hours in the day, but not really. You still have to eat, go to the bathroom and do any other daily tasks of normal life. So maybe it’s more like 4 for most people.

We are spending an average of 144 minutes per day on social media. That is 2.4 hours a day which equals 36.5 days a year! What do you get after spending all that time scrolling through memes? How is that helping you do better in life?

What if instead, you put those 800+hours a year into working on your business? Or into learning a language? Or.. [insert here anything you want]. That’s exactly what I’ve been doing and it’s incredible how much I’ve accomplished in only a few months.

We’re Happier When We’re Doing Something Useful

I know I’m not the only one who feels like a loser after spending an entire weekend Netflix & Chillin’ and watching viral videos. It’s Sunday at 5 PM and you have to go to work the next morning. You just did nothing for two whole days, yet it feels as if you’re more tired and have less energy than last Friday after work.

As humans beings, we need to stay busy and work on something meaningful every single day. At the end of each day, we see what we’ve done and that’s what truly makes us feel good.

You Are Going To Find Something To Do

It almost feels like a superpower when you stop wasting time on your phone. Don’t replace a bad habit with another bad habit though.

When you suddenly have all this time available that no one else seems to have, besides feeling great, you will for sure find something to do. We’re not meant to just sit around and do nothing! You will be working on new projects and personal goals in no time.

The problem is, we struggle with discipline. You get all these new ideas and a burst of motivation comes to you but it quickly dissipates. Leaving you feeling like you’re not good enough because you couldn’t do what you said you would do. Sounds familiar?

It’s still possible to do it. Awesome things happen when you just do it even when you’re not feeling like it. If you wait for the day when you actually want to work out, eat healthy food, or whatever it is that you want, it’s probably never going to happen.

Every time you show up and get that one thing done, you can celebrate a small win and I promise it feels fantastic. It gives you the energy to do the same thing tomorrow and that’s where true change and action comes from.

Having a Good Balance

Now, I’m not saying we should all delete our social media accounts and never talk to our friends again, but what if we connected in a more personal way? What if we eliminated some of the noise and made room for the people that we actually know and care about?

Use social media as a tool but don’t become a tool of it yourself.

How many hours a day are you spending on social media? What did you do this year that made your life better? Let me know in the comments!
